Art-based activism, or Artivism can be used to amplify and center the voices of those impacted by state sponsored violence and racial inequity in the United States. Artivism can build solidarity across lines of difference and connect to our shared humanity. In this talk, Felicia will demonstrate how Behind the Walls, Between the Lines, a movement to deepen the awareness of the legacy of racial inequity in the United States, and inspire activism at its dismantlement, sparks social change. Felicia A. Henry is a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. Her research interests include race, ethnicity, gender, criminal justice/mass incarceration, and social vulnerability in disasters. A Licensed Social Worker (LMSW), Felicia received her Master of Social Work degree from the School of Social Policy and Practice at the University of Pennsylvania. Felicia is a Bill Anderson Fund Fellow and Recipient of the Unidel Award in Sociology & Criminal Justice and the University Unidel Distinguished Graduate Scholar Award. Felicia is the founder of Behind the Walls, Between the Lines (BTWBTL), a movement to deepen the awareness of the legacy of racial inequity in America, particularly within the criminal legal system, and inspire activism aimed at its dismantlement. In Colombia, a 2016 peace deal between the government and leftwing FARC guerillas raised hope that half of a century of armed conflict would finally be over. But violence has flared again recently. FARC dissidents, drug trafficking groups and right-wing paramilitaries are all fighting to gain control of lucrative markets - like narcotics and illegal mining.

During the presidency of Lula Da Silva, billions of dollars in bribes were taken to allow construction companies to overcharge the government-owned oil company, Petrobras. Now, Brazil has corruption, but it's actually pretty good for a developing country. But the people of Brazil have come to expect more, and they have been left down.

Current president, Dilma Rousseff, was chairwoman of Petrobras during the period of corruption, but no one knows whether Lula or Dilma were involved or aware. But Lula was under investigation before Rousseff appointed him to be her chief of staff, a move that means he can no longer be prosecuted by a normal court.

I think this whole thing speaks very highly of Brazil. A reckoning had to come, and I'm pleased the citizens are holding the government accountable. However, I can't stop seeing parallels between the awful partisan situation here in the U.S. and the lack of skepticism people in this story have when it comes to believing awful things about their political opponents.

Using this scandal to clean up Brazil must be done, but using it to score political points or gain power is going to rip the country apart.

This is an epic story, and no one knows where it ends. Whether Rousseff retains power and who gets elected once the house is fully cleaned out will say a lot about how this very young democracy handles its economic and cultural growth when people's perceptions are controlled largely by social media.

I think there are many good things in Brazil's future, but leaders will have to do more than fight for power. They will have to actually lead.

Sometimes they get lucky and another animal from another species, they’ve never seen before may lend a helping hand. Sometimes, the reason why is unknown. Baboons Rescue Antelope

Baboons can become vicious when they are threatened and will gang up on predators to defend their territory, but what about when another animal is in trouble? Watch how this cheetah targets an antelope and see what happens next. After a quick run, the cheetah finally captures the antelope, but a group of baboons intervenes, and the cheetah abandons its prey. The baboons stand up to the cheetah who hisses at them, and they even chase it for a short distance scaring the cheetah off. The baboons even go check out the antelope to see if it's okay. The antelope seems injured, breathing on the ground, but eventually gets up and has difficulty walking among the baboons, but will live to see another day. Baboons gang up on a leopard this time and they chase it away. Baboons are fierce opponents, and they shouldn’t be messed with.

Bear Rescues Crow

Bears have been known to be nice. Watch what happens when this bear finds a crow drowning in a pond next to it. The bear notices the crow and reaches out to it with its paw as if to lift it out of the water. Maybe it is to eat it but let us watch and see before we jump to conclusions. The bear pulls the crow out of the water with its mouth clinging to one of the crow’s wings and just drops the crow on the ground before attending to its food. The crow looks a little out of it and tries getting back on its feet, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be easy. Eventually, the crow can get up and the bear still has its back turned away from the crow. Believe it or not, the bear actually saved the crow from drowning, because it had absolutely no interest in the crow afterward. What a great feat by this friendly and cuddly bear. This next clip shows a crow annoying a big polar bear who does not seem to mind the crow plucking at its fur. It finally feels something and turns around, notices the crow, but doesn’t really care.
