The Department of Art and the History of Art and the Program in Film and Media Studies presents a conversation between artist Jess Dugan and curator Mary Statzer.
Jess T. Dugan is an artist whose work explores issues of identity through photographic portraiture. Dugan’s work has been widely exhibited and is in the permanent collections of over 35 museums throughout the United States. Dugan’s monographs include To Survive on This Shore: Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Older Adults (Kehrer Verlag, 2018) and Every Breath We Drew (Daylight Books, 2015). They are the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and an ICP Infinity Award, and were selected by the Obama White House as an LGBT Artist Champion of Change. They are represented by the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago.
Mary Statzer is the curator of prints and photographs at University of New Mexico Art Museum (UNMAM), where she oversees a collection of more than 10,000 photographs. Statzer brought the exhibition To Survive on This Shore: Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Older Adults to UNMAM, and organized Patrick Nagatani: A Survey of Early Photographs and Indelible Ink: Native Women, Printmaking, Collaboration. In 2019, she and her colleagues launched UNMAM’s Acquisitions Fund for Diversity and Equity. Statzer holds an M.F.A. in printmaking from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. in the history and theory of art from University of Arizona. She has published articles in Aperture magazine and edited a multi-author book titled The Photographic Object 1970, released in 2016. She has participated in photography portfolio reviews across the United States.
Neck hump, also known as Dowager's Hump, is typically associated with older women aged 50-59 due to the sudden drop in estrogen during menopause. However, younger people of every gender are now developing this condition as well, often due to prolonged technology use and poor posture, which has led to the condition being called text hump, text neck, or tech neck. Neck hump can be caused by medical reasons such as osteoporosis, degenerative spine changes, congenital disorders, and underlying bone or ligament conditions.
Symptoms may include pain, muscle fatigue, stiffness or tension in the neck and upper shoulders, burning sensation on the spine between the shoulders, headaches and migraines, noticeable forward rounding posture of the shoulders, and forward leaning of the neck. Prevention and treatment options for neck hump include good posture practices, regular exercise, and good nutrition. Here are ten exercises to prevent or improve posture-related neck hump. If you are unsure of the cause of neck hump, it is recommended to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying pathologies or metabolic disorders.

How To Play Loose and Relaxed Tennis - Roger Federer Style
In order to produce effortless power and high-quality strokes, on a consistent basis, we have to be able to remain relaxed and loose with our technique. Download our FREE tennis guides here - https://www.top-tennis-training.com/free-guide/
When our muscles are tight and stiff, the range of motion is extremely limited and the power capacity of our strokes will diminish greatly.
You may be able to create power with a tense and tight body for a few shots, but you definitely won't be able to maintain that for the duration of a 2-3 hour match or a tournament.
On the flip side of that, we have a player like Roger Federer who looks so relaxed with his swings, even when it's 5 all in the fifth set of a grand slam final.
It's one of the reasons Roger looks so graceful when he plays, that relaxation is poetry in motion, yet produces deadly results.
It goes against the perception that many tennis players have that in order to produce power, we need to exert more force and that typically ends up with the player becoming more tense and stiff.
So how exactly can we stay relaxed and play loose, especially when going for more power?
There are a few tricks to help you with the process, but nothing is more important than our breathing habits.
Holding our breath is one of the quickest ways to immediately make our bodies stiffer and tighter. Think about a stressful situation, the first thing that changes is our breathing patterns. Typically, we either hold our breath or take shallow breaths.
When doing meditation or yoga, breathing correctly allows us to relax the muscles, and lowers our heart rate. This results in feeling at peace, the complete opposite of when we're stressed out.
How To Breathe In Tennis For Relaxation
Many tennis players grunt when they hit their tennis forehand, backhand or serve. This is a much better method than holding our breath completely (which happens with some players) but it's not the optimum way to breathe in tennis.
The grunt typically happens after the contact point, which means that when the player made contact, they were tight and stiff as they were holding their breath.
When you study Roger Federer, one of the things he does so well is control his exhale through the point of contact. His facial muscles are relaxed, his cheeks are not puffed up (a clear sign of holding your breath is puffy cheeks) and his body looks relaxed, even when going for massive power shots.
Federer starts his exhale prior to contact, which allows him to be relaxed as he hits the ball.
This is the optimal way to breathe in tennis.
By starting your exhale prior to contact, and exhaling through the strike zone, your muscles will stay loose and relaxed and work in their longest range of motion.

It’s hard to say exactly how many deep-pocket donors there are like NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but he’s as good as they come, according to several New York nonprofits that got a slice of his million-dollar pledge.
The player-turned activist ignited a national debate about the intersection of sports and activism after he began sitting – and later kneeling – during pre-game renditions of the national anthem. Some critics said he was just out to promote himself through such high-profile actions.
But Kaepernick has put his activism into action across the country through a pledge to donate $1 million to social justice initiatives big and small. The donations came out of nowhere, nonprofit leaders said – just an email from a Kaepernick associate stating that he wishes to give without that many strings attached, part of his low-key approach to giving.
Kaepernick could not be reached for comment.
The leader of at least one recipient – Coalition for the Homeless – was skeptical at first that it was really Kaepernick until the money transfer arrived in his organization’s coffers. A rough-and-tumble childhood also meant that Kaepernick had a first-hand exposure to many of the issues facing the clients of the nonprofit, which received $25,000 from him last fall.
"He knows the struggles that a lot of the people that we help here at the coalition have been through," Coalition for the Homeless Executive Director Dave Giffen said in a telephone interview. “We often deal with issues that Colin was bringing light to in his campaign.”
Other New York groups that received money include Justice League, Communities United for Police Reform and 100 Suits for 100 Men, which helps keep people out of prison by providing free suits outside courthouses so that criminal defendants can give judges and juries a snazzy first impression.
The final $100,000 installment of the two-year effort did not earmark funds for any New York-based groups, but the “Colin Kaepernick effect” lives on long after funds arrive in a nonprofit’s bank account.
The publicity inspired more than a dozen donations in his honor the week after he donated $33,000 to the Lower East Side Girls Club last year. That money will allow more girls to take part in an initiative promoting community development and civic engagement, and continues to pay dividend past the end-of-year fundraising season, Valerie Polanco, a spokesperson for the organization, said in an email.
He’s a force multiplier when it comes to raising money, according to Polanco.
“People have been donating in his honor as recently as two weeks ago,” she said. “It's the gift that keeps on giving!”

In a nationwide raid, 25 suspected members and supporters of a terrorist organization were arrested early Wednesday. Officials said the network, part of a wider right-wing movement, was already well established with a concrete plan to overthrow the German state by force and install a new government.
Prosecutors identified the suspected ringleaders only as Heinrich XIII P. R. and Ruediger v. P., in line with German privacy rules. The news magazine Der Spiegel reported that the former was a well-known 71-year-old member of a minor German noble family, while the latter was a 69-year-old former paratrooper.
According to prosecutors, Heinrich XIII P. R., who the group planned to install as the new leader of Germany, had made contact with Russian officials seeking to establish a new order in Germany once the Berlin government was overthrown. A Russian woman, Vitalia B, had allegedly given him help with this. The Russian embassy in Berlin denied having links to far-right terror groups.
A currently-serving soldier in the Bundeswehr's Special Forces Command (KSK) as well as several Bundeswehr reservists are also among suspects in the case, a spokesperson for Germany's Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) told the DPA news agency. A search was reported to have been carried out at the soldier's home and his barracks office in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
The trigger for the raids was an investigation into another Reichsbürger group that had planned to kidnap German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the case revealed the threat posed by the Reichsbürger movement. The president of the German parliament's lower house, Bärbel Bas, said the operation shows "that our democratic constitutional state is attentive and capable of action."
The group had targeted members of the Bundeswehr and police for their wanted to win their goals. It had formed a "military arm" and a council presided over by Heinrich XIII P. R. To implement their plans the group's members were prepared to use military means and violence against state representatives and were willing to kill to achieve their goals. According to the investigators, the members of the group "followed a conglomerate of conspiracy myths consisting of narratives of the so-called 'Reichsbürger' as well as QAnon ideology." The prosecutors added that the group's adherents believe Germany is ruled by a so-called "deep state," similar to baseless claims about the United States that were made by former President Donald Trump. The Reichsbürger movement is made up of a number of small organizations and individuals, mainly in the states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Bavaria. They do not accept the legality of the Federal Republic of Germany or any of its government authorities. The movement argues that the German constitution prior to World War II was never properly nullified and that the formation of the former West Germany in 1949, and now reunified Germany, was therefore never valid.
