"Geographies of Activism: Cartographic Memory and Community Practices of Care"
Juan Herrera, PhD, Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies, School of Language, Culture, and Society, Oregon State University
Less visible than 1960s Chicano Movement protest politics of sit-ins, marches, and boycotts are the Mexican American activists who created community-based organizations by enlisting residents in neighborhood improvement projects. Drawing from oral histories of 1960s activists from Oakland’s Fruitvale district, Professor Herrera shows how they consolidated a robust politics of place—establishing institutions that transformed the urban landscape and fashioned lasting commitments to social justice. He argues that the work of remembering 1960s activism is a cartographic process that draws attention to the social movement production of space. His concept of cartographic memory is a practice deployed by activists and an analytic to interpret how and why they defined their activities though the invocation and graphing of space. Activists’ cartographic recollections were fundamentally political claims to power that operated through space. Their memories served as a central device to bring into focus the transformative and experimental aspects of the Chicano movement, and its enduring impacts.

Green Beret David Christian was unquestionably a war hero in the Vietnam war and as he says, fought valiantly on behalf of the USA. My team and I conducted more than 200 interviews in 1989 from people who had lived through the 1960s and had strong feelings about what they had witnessed and lived through, not only during the war, but in the 1950s growing up and in the time since that war has ended. David Christian was wounded 7 times receiving 7 purple hearts as well as the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism. When he returned from the war, he worked as he does today, to help Vietnam veterans. Bill Ehrhardt, who presents his story in my very popular video clip, “Magnificent Storyteller Soldier” shared his personal experience. Many of my subscribers have reacted to it. I feel that David Christian is an equally powerful storyteller whose war perceptions and experiences were quite different. In this video he reflects on his early upbringing in the 1950s, his Catholicism, his powerful relationship with his mother, his experiences with college protesters in the antiwar movement, his return to America and his battles to help his fellow veterans deal with PTSD, job opportunities and other issues that they have confronted. His story evolves during the interview as he expresses more and more deeply, how he felt and what he saw and how he dealt with it.

Tess Holliday has inspired millions of women with her 'Body Positive' message. Unfortunately, that isn't the only message she's spreading.
In this video we'll discuss how Tess Holliday became the gateway to Health At Every Size - and how this toxic culture of lies, politics and cherry-picked data is affecting the health and happiness of those who join.
I started off thinking that Health at Every Size (HAES) was a Health Movement - and left thinking it was entirely political. Mostly due to Lindo Bacon, the author of the Health at Every Size book, who is incredibly problematic.
In this #documentary style video you will see that #HAES is essentially just Fat Acceptance in disguise. We will look at the history of the HAES movement and how it has grown over time through the influence of #tessholliday.

In November of 2014, the North Korean government published a video discrediting a prominent North Korean defector named Shin Dong-hyuk. Shin Dong-hyuk was an outspoken critic of North Korea's human rights record, drawing worldwide attention to the harsh realities of the North Korean regime with his 2012 book, "Escape from Camp 14", and testifying before a United Nations Commission of Inquiry about his ordeal.
In this 18-minute video, Shin's father had publicly denounced his son, claiming that his son never lived in a political prison camp and that his testimony was false. The presence of his father alone had prompted Shin to come out two months later, responding to the video. Though, it came as a shock to many of his supporters that he had admitted to changing plenty of crucial details of his story — thus rendering his original account unreliable. Other North Korean refugees then followed suit in taking him to task about the many discrepancies in his story, further delegitimising his credibility. This incident was dubbed "the Shin Dong-hyuk affair" among the North Korean watchers.
The aftermath of the affair had seen his activism slowly waning for the next three years before he eventually decided to retreat into private life, never to be seen again. His pledge to "not hold anything back" and "turn the North Korean regime upside down" never came to fruition. The sad part about this is that even if he were to come back today to continue advocating against the regime, he would forever be known as an unreliable narrator in the eyes of many, even within his closest circles.
The story of Shin Dong-hyuk was a tragic one. But while he was one of the more high-profile examples of North Korean defectors who got caught exaggerating their stories, there's a silver lining to be had in this. At least he admitted to doing so. Besides, there's one other North Korean defector that I would argue had done a lot worse than him.
This is the story of a North Korean defector who came into prominence for her public advocacy against the North Korean regime. As you delve deeper into her story, you will see many inconsistencies that are too glaring to ignore. She lied about parts of her story and failed to address its many contradictions — even when given multiple chances to do so.
In turn, the discrepancies in her accounts gave the regime and its sympathisers plenty of ammunition to minimise or outright dismiss the atrocities within the country. Not only her lies had ultimately damaged the North Korean refugee cause, but she also propagated harmful rhetoric spewed out by many right-wing figureheads in the West, amplifying misinformation in its wake.
This is the story of Yeonmi Park.

Sad photos and depressing statistics can only get a charitable campaign so far, especially in a world with “skip” buttons and commercial-free streaming. Ian Smith invites his audience to explore creative, artistic, and hilarious campaign strategies, all while discussing how valuable it can be to rely on inspiration rather than guilt when targeting a broad audience. Ian Smith has been hosting community events and leadership dialogues across Texas since 2010, when he co-founded and expanded his dorm-room idea into a registered 501c3 non-profit. The Human-Environmental-Animal-Team (H.E.A.T.) started as a small club aiming to make volunteering fun. Within one year, the club won a cash grant and the title of “Organization of the year” from Texas State University. Since its creation in 2010, Ian has founded eight chapters at universities and high schools across Texas. Ian also founded and currently manages a successful abroad program focusing on reforestation and restoration of coral reefs throughout Asia and Central America. Outstanding members from H.E.A.T. chapters have taken positive activism to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Thailand and Indonesia, changing the lives of attending students. The various H.E.A.T. chapters across Texas partake in physical volunteer work and have had many successes in launching creative awareness and fundraising campaigns. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
Grant writing for a nonprofit organization? In this video I show how I’d approach a real grant application for a nonprofit. #Nonprofits #Grants #Nonprofit
Whether you’re starting a nonprofit organization or fundraising for an existing nonprofit, grants are one of many options for funding or expanding special project or program. Still, writing grants can be tough and confusing! I’ve written over 100 grants throughout my nonprofit work - won some and lost some, and learned a lot about how to write grants along the way.
In this video I show how I’d approach writing a grant proposal for the Max & Victoria Dreyfus Foundation.
I hope this helps as you undertake nonprofit fundraising!
